1. To support the curriculum of the school, providing both teachers and students with the materials they need to follow the curriculum of the Los Angeles Unified School District and California and Common Core Standards.
2. To provide material for students that meets their emotional needs and their literary and recreational interests.
Selection Responsibility
The librarian is responsible for the selection of materials. Materials are chosen by the librarian with assistance provided by faculty, staff, parents, and students.
Criteria for Selection
Materials chosen for the library shall:
1. enrich and support the curriculum;
2. support educational, emotional, and recreational needs of the users;
3. meet high standards for quality in physical format, subject treatment, accuracy of information,
4. be appropriate for the academic subject areas;
5. represent different viewpoints, establishing a library collection with balance.
See Evaluating Library Collections: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights and Diversity in Collection Development: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights from the American Library Association for information on the library’s policy.
Selection Tools
The librarian will use professional resources to assist in selecting materials for the library, including but not limited to:
1. professional publications such as Booklist and School Library Journal;
2. annotated bibliographies dealing with YA literature;
3. online resources such as social media created and curated by professionals who work with YA population;
4. newspaper and magazine reviews;
4. recommendations from LAUSD Integrated Library and Textbook Support Services;
5. recommendations from students, staff, and other members of the school community.
Professional Collection

Audio Visual Materials
AV materials are chosen with the same care and according to the same criteria as the print collection.
Electronic Information Policy
The library provides computers with Internet access for students and faculty. Both students and faculty shall abide by the policies set forth by the Los Angeles Unified School District in its Acceptable Use Policy. The librarian maintains an informational website for the library. The electronic resources on the library website represent, to the best of the librarian’s knowledge, the best that is currently available. However, due to the ephemeral nature of the Internet, the user is responsible for using discretion when using Internet resources provided by the library. Parents, school faculty, and the librarian share the responsibility for teaching students appropriate “netiquette,” cyber ethics, and information literacy.
Gifts
Gifts are welcome. Each gift is evaluated according to the same criteria as items under consideration for purchase. The library retains the right to refuse gifts. A gift once given becomes the sole property of the library and the donor relinquishes all rights to it.
Weeding
The library follows District policy for weeding. In general, items that are damaged, no longer support the curriculum, or contain out-dated or inaccurate information will be removed from the shelves.
More information about weeding can be found here.
Challenged Materials
The library follows District procedures for reviewing challenged materials. Those who wish to challenge the inclusion of an item in the library collection must fill out a Request for Review of Challenged Materials. Receipt of the challenge will be acknowledged within ten school days. A review committee will be formed to respond to the challenge within 20 days of receiving the challenge. The complainant will be notified of the committee’s decision within ten days of the final decision. Every effort will be made to deal with the complaint in a timely way. The challenged material will stay in use pending a final decision.
The library adheres to the principles stated in the ALA Library Bill of Rights, The Freedom to Read Statement, and Challenged Materials: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights.
